그분은 사망을 폐하셨습니다
HE ABOLISHED DEATH
이제 우리의 구원자 예수 그리스도의 나타나심으로 분명히 드러났으니 그분께서는 사망을 폐하시고 복음을 통해 생명과 죽지 아니함을 밝히 드러내셨느니라 (디모데후서 1:10).
수년 전 내가 이 구절을 이해하게 됐을 때, 잠시 나는 내가 그것을 보지 못 했다고 생각했습니다. “바울이 실제로 예수 그리스도께서 사망을 폐하셨다고 말씀했었나?” 라고 의아해 했습니다. 나는 그 구절을 철저하고 상세하게 공부했고, 헬라어 원문을 보고 사용된 모든 단어를 분석했습니다. 나는 내가 공부한 후에 그 구절이 그것이 말씀했던 것, 즉 예수 그리스도께서 사망을 폐하셨음을, 바로 그대로 의미한다는 것을 발견했습니다.
어떤 사람들은 그것을 추론해 내려고 노력하며 바울이 영적인 죽음을 가리키고 있었다고 말합니다. 천 번을 얘기해도, 아닙니다! 우리의 시작하는 구절로부터 예수님께서는 사망을 폐하셨을 뿐만 아니라, 그분은 생명과 죽지 아니함을 밝히 드러내셨음을 주의하여 보십시오. 사망이 영적인 사망이었다면, 죽지 아니함은 어떻습니까? 성경이 영적인 죽지 아니함을 의미했었을까요? 그 표현은 말이 되지 않습니다, 사실, 그것은 모순입니다. 그래서, 바울이 죽지 아니함을 언급했던 이유는 그가 육신적 사망을 이야기하고 있었기 때문입니다.
하지만 어떤 사람들은 성경이 고린도전서 15:26에서, “멸망 받을 마지막 원수는 사망이니라,” 고 말씀하는 것에 의해 문제를 겪습니다. 그래서 그들은, “우리에게는 여전히 다루어야 할 사망이 있습니다, 그것은 멸망 받을 마지막 원수입니다” 라고 말합니다. 아닙니다, 그것은 성경 기록이 말씀하고 있는 바가 아니며 내가 설명할 것입니다.

이처럼, 성경이 사망이 멸망 받을 마지막 원수라고 말씀할 때, 그것은 불 호수에 던져질 영으로서 사망에 관하여 말씀하고 있는 것입니다, “사망과 지옥도 불 호수에 던져졌더라. 이것은 둘째 사망이니라” (요한계시록 20:14). 그때가 바로 사망이 멸망 받을 때인 것입니다. 그러나 이미, 그것은 정복되었습니다, 사망의 법은 폐지되었습니다. 주님께서는 헛되이 하늘로부터 오지 않으셨습니다. 그분은 헛되이 죽지 않으셨습니다. 그분은 사망을 폐하시려고 오셨고 그분은 그것을 성취하셨습니다! 하나님을 송축합니다!

HE ABOLISHED DEATH
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1:10).
When I came across this verse years ago, for a second I thought I didn’t see it. “Did Paul actually say Jesus Christ abolished death?” I wondered. I studied the verse in-depth, looking in the original Greek and dissecting every word used. I found out after my study that the verse meant exactly what it said: Jesus Christ abolished death.
Some people try to reason it out and say Paul was referring to spiritual death. A thousand times, no! Observe from our opening verse that Jesus not only abolished death, He brought life and immortality to light. If the death was spiritual death, what about immortality? Could the Bible have meant spiritual immortality? That expression makes no sense; in fact, it’s a contradiction. Thus, the reason Paul made reference to immortality is because he was talking about physical death.
Some people however get troubled by what the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:26: “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.” So they say, “We still have death to deal with; it’s the last enemy to be destroyed.” No, that’s not what the Scripture is saying and I’ll explain.
It’s like when the Bible says in the book of Revelation, “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God…” (Revelation 12:10). The fact that the voice said “Now is come salvation” didn’t mean everyone in the world was receiving salvation for the first time. People had been saved before then.
So, when the Bible says death is the last enemy to be destroyed, it’s talking about death as a spirit that would be cast into the lake of fire: “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death” (Revelation 20:14). That’s when death will be destroyed. But already, it has been overcome; the law of death has been abrogated. The Master didn’t come from heaven for nothing. He didn’t die for nothing. He came to abolish death and He achieved it! Blessed be God!
PRAYER
Dear Father, thank you for our victory over death, hell and the grave; thank you for bringing us into life and immortality through the Gospel. I’m born of the life-giving Spirit of Christ Jesus. Therefore, I’m a life-giving spirit and I live by the law of the Spirit of life in Jesus Christ. Amen.
